Australian Museum Diprotodon Exhibition
The Australian Museum Diprotodon Exhibition is housed at the Coonabarabran Visitor Information Centre, conveniently located on the Newell Highway at the southern end of town. The exhibition displays the skeleton and skull of a Diprotodon, the largest marsupial ever to have lived, often likened to a giant-sized wombat. The remains were discovered in 1979 in the creek bed of Cox's Creek near Tambar Springs. The exhibition also provides information on other megafauna believed to have existed around the same time. Free guided tours are available for groups with advance notice; please contact the Coonabarabran Visitor Information Centre for more information.
In addition to the Diprotodon display, the Centre features an area showcasing artwork from local artists and the Aboriginal Keeping Place, offering insights into the region's rich cultural heritage.
The Coonabarabran Visitor Information Centre is a short walk from the central business district and offers amenities such as public toilets, picnic areas, and free barbecues. There's also a gift shop with a great range of gifts, souvenirs, maps, and books.
Whether you're interested in prehistoric creatures, local art, or cultural history, the Coonabarabran Visitor Information Centre provides a comprehensive experience for all visitors.
